A celebration of an icon on Steve Jobs Day

October 16 is a day to remember.

For Marie Antoinette, Queen of France, October 16 in 1793 was the day she was beheaded.

In 1975, October 16 is remembered as the day supply of funds was blocked for the Whitlam government, causing the 1975 Australian constitutional crisis.

Desmond Tutu was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on October 16, 1984.

More recently, October 16 was declared “Steve Jobs Day” – a day to celebrate the life of Steven Paul "Steve" Jobs - entrepreneur, marketer, inventor, technology visionary and also the co-founder, chairman, and former CEO of Apple Inc.

The inaugural day of celebration was the brainchild of the Governor of California, Jerry Brown, and has since been recognised annually on October 16 with events around California, Steve Jobs’ hometown.

So, what does a person have to do to have a day dedicated to them? Well, Steve Jobs was the mastermind behind the development of the iMac, iPod, iPhone, iPad and iTunes, as well as the Apple retail, iTunes and App Stores. Achieving a cult following throughout the world, the company's products and services saw Apple become the world's most valuable publicly traded company in 2011 and was considered to be one of the greatest business turnarounds ever.

Steve Jobs has been described by many as “legendary”, a “visionary” and a “futurist”. Industry publications have referred to him as the "Father of the Digital Revolution" and the "master of innovation”. On the other side of the coin, he’s also been referred to as “notoriously stubborn”, “hot tempered” and good friend Jony Ive once commented that the “normal rules of social engagement… don't apply to him”. But nobody would dispute that he was an iCon of technology and change and he's deserving of a day being declared in his memory.
