What Are Tempered Glass Screen Protectors?

Whether in your pocket or your bag, your mobile phone is always with you. If you’ve ever dropped your phone and smashed your screen, you’ll know how heartbreaking and inconvenient all those cracks can be, and that’s if you can still use your phone. As frustrating as a cracked screen can be, knowing that just a screen protector could have saved us is even worse. A little extra protection can go a long way, and the protection of a tempered glass protector goes even further.

Tempered vs non-tempered glass

Tempered glass is the best screen protector you can buy. It is a kind of safety glass developed for applications like shower screens, diving masks and windshields where safety is crucial. Tempered glass is much stronger, and whereas normal glass will shatter into sharp shards on impact, tempered glass breaks into granules which are harder to cut yourself on.

What Are Tempered Glass Screen Protectors?

Sometimes known as toughened glass, tempered glass is four to five times tougher than normal glass. It resists scratching better than your screen and far better than plastic, and the oleophobic coating reduces fingerprint marks. Best of all, if you drop your phone your protector will absorb the damage and break apart instead of your screen. This way you can replace the much cheaper protector instead of your screen. It is worth noting though that not all tempered glass screen protectors are created equal! There is a relation between screen thickness and strength, and Sprout’s tempered screens are rated the hardest at 4h.

Glass is the best material you could have between you and your screen. It transmits light better, with no colour tint. Tempered glass is just as transparent and smooth as normal glass when it’s been treated and finished properly.

Tempered glass screen protectors are a little more expensive than plastic, usually in the $40 – $60 range. Just like with plastic screen protectors it’s best not to skimp on price. Those “ten for five dollars” deals look too good to be true because they are. Cheap screen protectors can and do end up doing more damage than good, leaving sticky residue and even staining the screen.

If you’ve installed a plastic screen protector then you’ll know how difficult it can be. The upside is that tempered glass is infinitely easier to handle and install. Be sure to check out our replacement screen installation guide for tips on getting it right.

If you love and depend on your smartphone and enjoy the smooth sheen of unshattered glass, you have a few options. At minimum, you can protect your tech with a plastic protector, but for a longer lasting, scratch and fingerprint free screen, our favourite is always going to be tempered glass.
