Which Smartphone Is Best for You?

It used to be that smartphones were reserved purely for business people and those with too much money to burn, but these days they're everywhere. Not having a smartphone now seems outdated and most people agree that they couldn't live without one thanks to the constant access they provide to email, social media, games and music. Buying a smartphone today seems like a no brainer, whether you're finally getting one for the first time or if you're simply upgrading to a newer model. However, there are so many options out there it can be hard to know, 'what smartphone should I choose?'

With so many varieties of smartphone out there, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed and just assume they're all as good as each other. In fact, many people will choose a phone based purely on looks and style, but this could leave you with a smartphone that barely functions. Remember, you can always change and update the look of your phone with the right phone case or phone cover! Different phones work better for different applications, so knowing what you want and need from your device is vital when choosing.

How to choose the right smartphone for you

At first BlackBerry ruled the smartphone roost, only to be dethroned by the iPhone, but now there are even more choices on offer from Android and Windows as well. While iPhone and Android are undoubtedly the most popular, that doesn't mean you should blindly follow the crowd. This guide should help you to think about what you need from your phone, and so choose the right one for you.

First of all, you should have a think about what you want from your platform or operating system. All the platforms available have pros and cons. BlackBerry is excellent if you mainly want to use your phone for email and web browsing, making it great for professionals, but it does not provide many apps. The iPhone, on the other hand, has over 300,000 apps available on its app store – by far the most apps of any of the platforms. However, the iOS platform is only available on a limited number of phones. If you want more variety when it comes to phone choice, Android also has a large number of apps (over 100,000), and is available on a wide range of phones. Android is also great if you're keen to customise your platform. Windows, while not so great on the app front, is excellent if you're looking to do lots of work on documents and spreadsheets on your phone.

You should also consider the service provider when choosing your smartphone – different phones will only be available on certain networks, so check how good the service is for each in your area. Also look into whether they provide 3G or 4G service.

You'll also want to compare the different hardware available. Do you prefer QWERTY keyboards or touchscreen? If you're going to be doing a lot of emailing and texting you might prefer the QWERTY keyboard available on the BlackBerry. However, what keyboard you have will also affect the screen size. If you're looking to watch videos and browse websites you'll want a bigger screen, and right now Android offer the largest screen. You should also consider battery life, and memory. If you plan on having plenty of photos, music, and videos stored on your phone, you'll need more memory. Think about whether you're planning on taking lots of pictures on your phone as well. If so, you'll want to choose one with a really good camera.

Take the time to test phones out, and get feedback from your friends and online reviews. You'll likely be using your smartphone all the time, and might be stuck with it for a while, so make sure you get it right.
